A few years ago I was pitted against a freelance artist solely based on their hourly rates. At first glance, the freelance artist seemed like the more economical choice, with a rate that undercut me by £10. The client’s decision seemed rational - save money on labour costs, right? However, what began as a seemingly cost-effective choice quickly turned into a revelation.
As the project unfolded, it became apparent that the freelance artist’s output was sluggish compared to myself (a seasoned designer). Quality suffered as deadlines loomed, and frustration mounted for the client. Midway through the project, the client recognised the error in judgment and sought advice and called me (the designer he had previously worked with for over two years). I offered guidance (albeit a little glibly), and it became evident that the perceived savings in hourly rate were outweighed by delays, rework, and the inevitable compromises on the project’s integrity.
The client eventually reached out to me, expressing regret and extending an apology. A lesson had been learned, and the true value of my expertise had been underscored. In the end, the client found themselves with a bill £220 higher than than my initial quote, a reflection of the extra time and effort required to rectify the missteps caused by the ill-fated cost-cutting decision.
